Meta Ads creative testing framework for UK DTC

The creative testing framework we use on Meta for UK DTC brands - concepts, angles, hooks and the statistical signal you need before killing an ad.

The framework

Test concepts (big ideas), not variations (colour swaps). A concept is a message + format + hook pairing; variations are minor edits inside a winning concept.

Weekly cadence

  • Monday: ship 6-10 new concepts into a testing CBO.
  • Wednesday: mid-week review. Kill anything below 0.7% CTR with £50+ spend and zero purchases.
  • Friday: promote winners into the evergreen CBO. Brief next week's creatives.

The signals to trust

  • CTR (all) > 1.2% on cold audiences.
  • Hook rate (3-sec video views / impressions) > 30%.
  • Hold rate (thruplays / 3-sec views) > 15%.
  • CPA within 2x target on the first £3-5K spend.

Angles that work for UK DTC

  1. Founder story (why we built this).
  2. Problem/solution demo (before/after).
  3. UGC testimonial (real customer, not actor).
  4. Press mention or expert endorsement.
  5. Category comparison (versus the incumbent).
  6. Ingredient/material deep-dive.
  7. Behind-the-scenes production.

Rotate through all 7 - the algorithm rewards concept diversity more than raw volume.

Format guidance

60/40 static-to-video by spend for most UK DTC brands. Statics are cheaper to produce and win on hook clarity; UGC video wins on retention. Avoid highly-produced brand video for cold audiences - it under-performs UGC by 30-60%.

Mistakes we see weekly

  • Killing ads on day 1 (need 24-48h to leave learning).
  • Testing 30 creatives on £50/day (impossible to get signal).
  • Judging by 7-day ROAS on new creative (window closes before organic tail).
  • Refreshing the same concept endlessly instead of shipping new angles.
