Abandoned cart flows that recover 15%+

The abandoned cart flow structure that consistently recovers 15%+ of abandoned carts for UK DTC brands on Klaviyo - timing, copy, offer and SMS.

The 3-email structure

  1. Email 1 (1 hour): soft reminder. "You left this behind" + cart contents.
  2. Email 2 (24 hours): objection handling. Reviews, FAQ, delivery clarity - no discount.
  3. Email 3 (48 hours): soft offer. Free UK shipping or 10-15% off, urgency close.

SMS at hour 4

For opted-in subscribers, add an SMS at hour 4. Adds 4-7% to cart recovery on top of email. UK GDPR requires explicit opt-in at checkout - not pre-ticked, not bundled.

Copy that works

  • Show the actual cart item image and name.
  • Address the top UK abandonment reasons: unexpected delivery cost, forgot, comparison shopping.
  • Third email: urgency, but honest (stock, offer expiry).

Offer strategy

Only in email 3, only if margin allows, and only 10-15%. Too generous trains shoppers to abandon; too small doesn't move the needle. Free UK shipping often outperforms a % discount at similar cost.

Benchmarks

  • Recovery rate 12-20% of abandoners (best-in-class 20%+).
  • Email 1 open rate 55-70%.
  • Revenue per recipient £8-£25.

Pitfalls

  • Sending beyond 72 hours (diminishing returns).
  • Discount in email 1 (trains abandonment).
  • No SMS layer despite opt-in list (leaving 4-7% on the table).
